What's Life For? : The Peripheries of Capitalism

What’s our ultimate goal in life? To be gainfully employed, buy a nice home and car? And then what? To acquire all these things and incessantly worry about their maintenance and upkeep? Then maybe have offspring and begin to worry about our ability to support and provide for them as well? To live life restricted, fearful and primarily in pursuit of cash money? Whatever your answer, it definitely seems this way for all of us. We’re born into this world, stamped with a number that will forever define our fiscal significance, and it begins.

We’re institutionalized early and socialized into our school system. We begin to learn, but not for the love of wisdom and acquiring knowledge, but for our social respect for “education” itself and the likelihood it will take us to greater opportunity.

Either a doctor, lawyer, teacher or mechanic, we distinguish career directions our talents or mental capacities will make feasible, and morph into a preexisting career as high on the social totem pole as we can go.

And then we continue to “exist” without “living” at all. We begin to fall into our empty repetitions, and endless game of worrying and balancing. There is no end and no being comfortable enough. More is always better and beseeched. There’s also a very blurred line between needs and wants. Exploring this gift of life to the fullest, enjoying time with friends and family, or spending time attempting to learn and grow spiritually are things we simply try to fit into our schedules. Mainly, we exhaust our time here fantasizing about being rich, remain stuck in fruitless routines, work all day for companies that don’t do anything for society, and desperately attempt to figure out more money earning possibilities to sustain ourselves and acquire more. Ironically, we do this amidst haunting notions of something more to life, and the after-life burning through our sub-conscience thought. There’s a pervasive feeling that this life is somehow misdirected or even wasted.

As we wallow in this capitalist existence, everything is set up for us to live blindly in our illusions. Governments allows banks, businesses, creditors, and mortgage companies to take advantage of us, almost ensuring a life of debt and entrapment. Most of us don’t actually own anything. It’s an oppressive form of inconspicuous, modern day slavery. From our houses and cars in our driveways, to the utilities we depend on, we continuously pay for them without finality. Houses are paid off through monthly mortgages pretty much for life. The cost of houses continue to rise and we keep adding to our own problems because of our incessant attempts to make more money. It’s become a popular trend to buy up property for the sole purpose of reselling it for more money. That’s a typical function of capitalism: screw the guy next to you. Eventually the system will collapse and squeeze the middle class away into few rich and many poor.

The lower you are on the totem pole, the more “the system” works against you. In fact, businesses run your credit to continue the downward spiral. If you make less or have bad credit, you don’t get loans, you get hit with higher interests, longer, harder and more expensive options, and you often have to pay more and/or upfront for most items and services. Doesn’t even make a smidgen of sense---no homophone pun intended. When you have less, you pay more with more obstacles to hurdle. When you have more, you have less obstacles and its smoother sailing. Who makes these rules? Who do these rules work for and what are they designed to do? Of course it doesn’t make any humane sense, but it successfully serves the purpose of keeping us afraid and keeps the game in play. We know something isn’t quite right but we sit there and let it be, as long as we make sure it’s not us down there. That’s another one of the funny things about our capitalistic system; it makes us so competitive and selfish we have no intentions of reform until it does hit the rest of us during recessions.

So what are the main consequences of the proverbial rat race? Well, most importantly it keeps us spiritually dead and distracted from real issues. It keeps people divided, unhappy and competing. There’s also a pervasive disinterest in politics, human rights, or saving the planet. Everyone’s too preoccupied with survival and materialism. Everyone, whether they realize it openly or not, is depressed. It’s even affected our art. Music that used to represent our consciousness and raw emotions now mostly feed our insatiable need of distraction. Most music created today is run by companies trying to make lots of money as well, keeping the content tap dancing for mass appeal. Most contemporary music is dead, corporate, predictable and stuck exploiting sex, drugs, partying, and flashing money….all while Rome is burning.

We don’t have a free society or a democracy either. We're tricked into thinking we do. The best slaves are slaves who don’t notice the chains. We’re slaves who adhere to the oppressive agenda of a veiled elite.

We don’t have freedom of press. Big business and advertisers run the media and influence its content. Rupert Murdoch, for example, owns Fox, The New York Post and a host of other media publications from the US to Australia. One man’s prerogative has become a reason why millions of people are inundated with opinion based news with laughable showmen and "commentaters" like Glen Beck at the forefront, posed as respectable journalists. News isn’t reported, news is edited, filtered down, and deliberated versions of it are spoon fed to the masses. Men in suits with national coverage can insinuate that Obama is an America hating Muslim. They can tell us we have a man in Saturn. They can pretty much tell us whatever they want as if we’re not entitled to responsible, unbiased, un-opinionated and factual news. They don’t operate in the name of good journalism, they’ve evolved into operating almost completely in the name of powerful special interests or entertainment and money earning ratings.

We don’t have freedom of speech. If your views are not influenced or in accordance with that of the powerful elite, you most likely will never get the proper platform or amplification. Another case in point, Ron Paul has run for president with very sound reasoning. He exposes problems with the current state of Government, including our dependence on the Federal Reserve. However, because he’s neither Democrat or Republican, and because the Reserve controls all of our money, he’ll never be given reasonable face time and he’s always drowned out. They don't deny him his right to run, they simply manuever the public into not taken him seriously by ignoring him and anyone else who doesn't fit into the mold. There’s obvious proof that millions of Americans were inspired by Ron Paul and his arguments. Regardless, controlled by their powerful parties, the other candidates never address the issues Ron Paul dragged to light, they never even mention his name.

The Altruist International website states, “ Mathematics replace morality in the sense that profitable activity thrives and all other activity is suppressed. Problems arise from activities which are financially productive but socially destructive. Love is fundamental to human welfare and yet, because it leads to activity such as sharing, caring and giving away, it runs counter to economic ‘progress’, so those activities which promote love are discouraged, while those which discourage it are promoted. Inadvertently perhaps, the capitalist system rewards selfishness but punishes altruism.” This is the framework in which society contiues to evolve.

Our dog eat dog, survival of the wealthiest, subservient to big business society is supposed to bottom out. It will continue to get worse until we finally realize in the aftermath of losing our values, spirituality, and happiness that the machine wins, and we lose. Our social worship of money and material possessions, in addition to our dependence on gas and chemicals that destroy our planet daily isn’t our individual decision, it’s what we allow to happen.

Recessions and Depressions aren’t just scary words we need to steer ourselves away from. They’re our eventual destination. It’s how the monopoly game ends. Imprudent administrations like the previous only push us closer to the inevitable. Smart leaders and strong administrations only buy us more time in our illusion and enable us to swim away from the spiraling drain.

I know I’m preaching to the choir in many circles and I’m not saying anything ground breaking. Many of us know this already. That’s what’s frustrating. We’ve become a ho-hum society that take beatings on the stool. Everyone sits and waits for the world to change, but change nothing about what they do individually. There are a number of things that are common knowledge, but our brainwashing is so deep that fear keeps us immobile. People who galvanize, speak out and try to do something are looked at as radicals and freaks.

So how do we fix this? The world won’t be changed overnight. However, we should never give up on what we know should be done no matter how implausible it is. We could begin by at least changing our attitudes. That would begin to effect society a lot more than we think. When we have children that wish to follow their hearts and do something not socially considered lucrative, we shouldn’t chastise them and poison them with the ideologies the world has pumped into us and contaminate their pure initiatives. Never forget that people trapped in careers they hate have murdered their spirit and are unreasonable, not people who follow their passion.

We could be more socially conscious and know what many of these businesses are doing. Take LA for example. I love LA. However, you have to know it’s a perfect example of how the oil and auto industries have held us back in time. It's one of the most popular cities in the world but there are no subways or alternatives means of travel. There’s always heavy traffic and everyone has to drive everywhere. Firstly, we should’ve already converted over to electric power, emancipating us from exorbitant gas prices and toxic carbon monoxide pollution long ago. Successful prototypes have already been made, but blocked from world wide distribution. The Auto and Oil industries are public enemies that keep us from having things that would change the world to keep us steady consumers. Their money, lobbyist and secret dealings ring louder and outmaneuver our needs.

There should be more cures or preventative attention for most diseases instead of innumerable medicines designed to help people live with the disease subservient to drugs. In the 20's, 30's and 40's, there were cures announced in the news all the time. Not anymore. Because of profit, the health industry has absolutely no interest in curing people. They want to keep us functionally ill so we can continue to purchase drugs. Most diseases are preventable. We should all educate ourselves on healthier living and try to be independent of prescription drugs. They don't want us healthy and independent, they want to sell us drugs for life.

As for education, I know it shouldn’t be something you spend decades paying off. Without scholarships, the lower class obviously wouldn’t be able to afford to send their children to college. Our social growth is stunted and we’re fixed against each other to compete. So as long as most of us can send our kids to school, we really don’t care if many people can’t.

Know your opposition. There are many people still hooked up to “the matrix”, so to speak. There are many people who work in and for these oppressive conglomerates and are genuinely fearful of change or shift in public opinion. Some consider people against capitalism gone berserk un-American. Even when pressured and made to feel ridiculous, never let your focus and resolve for what’s right break.

Lastly we need to calm the monster that’s been created in us and simplify. We've become greedy, simplistic and spiritually vacant. We don’t need 3 cars and 2 homes. We need to rediscover the fact that there’s more to life than chasing money and acquiring things. Financial comfort and security is great. However, we take things to another level. People are depressed, suicidal and going through various financial problems that they placed themselves into because of greed and not living within their means. One of my favorite quotes is from the movie “Fight Club”, “ Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate, so we can buy shit we don’t need…” So true and so very well summated.

The time has already come for us to start living for bigger reasons beyond ourselves and our bank accounts. And some things don't have the luxury of time, there's an urgency for our actions and state of mind.

What should our most urgent social focus be?

  • Cracking down on pollution and climate change.
  • Putting an end to partisan politics.
  • Restructuring our economy and stability.
  • Human rights and race relations.
  • Restructuring our educational system.

Wow, I love this, great writing ^_^. I really agree 100% on everything you’ve said. It starts from the day we are born and socialized in a miniature version of society-school-till we are experienced enough to play what is called life after graduation. Time is an illusion and life is a gift meant to share with loved ones and exploring our connection to a higher power; and so its personally frustrating to live “plugged”. I definitely feel that ones heart, ones passion, is our key to unlocking real living with others and ourselves. The heart is our only reality and we have to protect and maintain its rawness. We ARE slaves in this society with invincible chains, and this mental strangle bleeds in so many ways, like you’ve given examples on. And there are SO many more ways - the arts, media, politics, toys, books, family, and organized religion- that yeah, its this mentality that is really so loud and in our face that it is silent. We do have a responsibility as people to not just be introspective, but honest with others and lift one another from our ignorance. I grow very tired of this empty and loveless culture that is breeding and growing around us. I know we are not fully consumed by it yet, but the battle for the heart is accelerating. To sit in a lounge or bar, listening to music of some guy telling a girl to back it up while throwing his money in the air is nauseating to me and only what seems to be enjoyed when one is intoxicated. An outlet that is MEANT solely for our souls is currently being butchered. Lol I suppose I too can go on and on with this subject as you have so wonderfully started, but I’m not sure this page can hold all my rambling. So I will close out FOR NOW, by highlighting my agreement with your “Lastly we need to calm the monster that’s been created in us and simplify” - I think that yes, perhaps things can’t progress and get better in two days with everyone reaching some enlightenment. However we can all simply take one personal confident step and look within ourselves for change. I’d also like to share a piece of writing that I’ve done a while ago based on your topic here. I’ve found that the ones who I have shared this with feel similar, and it is important that this giant elephant be truly acknowledged. If not as a whole in society, then a start in the arts where the heart is meant to rule and thrive.

My thoughts

So apparently work is beautiful and fulfilling. The original kind of work that is. The kind of work you do for the earth, for the true gifts of life. It seems that work now a-days in this society has turned into a selfish act. It is not done for the beauty and honor of life anymore. Its not done to appreciate and respect the gifts life has to offer. Instead its done from greed. From a hunger we’ve been forced to have. And some of us blindly feed ourselves what we think is good for us; chewing content and fulfilled with the culture of greed. While others choke - they struggle to accept that to be happy one must collect and hoard objects, and slay and abuse nature. Work turns into a form of slavery, and not the dance of honor one must have to the power that is Life. Will there ever be a true medium? And if so, how would it flow with the diversity that is everything. 12/08

The present system in America is the greatest system on earth. It allows a person to take charge personally for his family, and his future. You assign generic reasons for ones drive to succeed as greed and other shallow reasons. I tell you that America provides the opportunity to live a comfortable life and enjoy a nice life with your family without the interference of government(to some extent). What is your alternative to a capitalist system,....a government run economy....what a disaster!!!!

Thanks for posting Braudboy. Feeling that we have the best running system in the world is an opinion based on what you're accustomed to, your view of how things should be and what you want in life. Respectfully, I, and I'm sure many others have another. I'm not promoting a government run society, but the opposite. A transparent government truly ran by "the people" and comitted toward technological advancement, better management of the earth, and our REAL interests. Not just revenue.

The Alruist International website also puts it simply "What is wrong with the idea of capitalism?

It is based on a psychological model which is fundamentally flawed. It has disrupted traditional patterns of human interaction, bringing material and spiritual poverty by devastating precious indigenous cultures and ecosystems. Traditional, ways of life are replaced by a debased monoculture, controlled by an unsustainable money system which rewards those who plundering the natural environment, giving them an unsustainable material prosperity. A veneer of wellbeing covers terrible psychological and social damage."

I doubt I'll convince you of anything or vice versa. Many people are strong in their own perspectives and I respect that. However, with each passing decade the things that society needs will continue to peak. All I ask is for everyone to be mindful of the things eroding away from society that we're going to need to focus on sooner or later regardless.

This is all fine if you are writing a childrens' book where there is a fantasy land of happily ever after and everyone is honest and looking out for each other. In the real world we live in, governments are corrupt as power corrupts! THere must be strict limits on their actions. Private business is where things must happen in America. Individuals can be put in charge of their own succes to a large degree. It is not a perfect system, but it is the best system for an imperfect world.

Hey braudboy, I do agree, power does corrupt, and of course in the society we live in - the thought of everyone being honest and looking out for one another would only seem to fit in - in a fantasy land book for kids. And that is a very disappointing reality in the world we live in. However I do believe that we as individuals can change that. Obviously not in one day - but simply by taking charge and putting out positive intentions out there, we can start a small snow ball effect and create our own untainted bliss. Like how you mentioned private business being something we as individuals can grow from. I do think this "fantasy land" can actually come to be, it just starts small, I believe that's the reality of it. Whats the best way to eat an elephant?...in small bites ^_^.

Sorry braudboy, I meant to respond a while ago but a million obligations popped up this month. I agree with you that it is an imperfect world braudboy. But thinking we have the best system for it is laughable. "The system", banks, healthcare, etc. left unchecked as it is continues to evolve more and more toward screwing society. It’s obvious. How could you possibly think this is a perfect system? In fact there’s a projection that MOST Americans will not even be able to afford healthcare---and costs are due to DOUBLE by 2016. From banks to health care, THIS IS NOT the best system. Obviously, It's flawed and unbalanced. It's potentially a good system if we keep adding the necessary changes and pressure. This won't happen sitting here pretending everything’s A-ok.

We live in a time where we are taught to fear government. I don't fear government, I fear the corruption and mismanagement of government which we have the power to change, monitor, and control if we commit ourselves to it. Not sitting around in false contentment and denial.

There was once a time where there wasn't too much government involvement in certain aspects of trade and travel--and independent factions were able to execute their will in pursuit of money. Those people were called PIRATES. They raped, pillaged, terrorized and stole incessantly without much opposition--storing hordes of treasures for themselves. Eventually nations began to realize the need for the policing of the seas instead of having a wild free for all because of the thugs taking advantage of the freedom and causing havoc. Nowadays pirates still exist, but they wear suits and their theft is much more subtle and legal. The real enemy isn't government. Nor is the enemy in entrepreneurs. It's human GREED. GREED exists in government and outside of government and could exist in your next door neighbor. It’s all over. Its our job to be shrewd and proactive and stamp out monetary injustices everywhere we see it; in government and outside of government.

When the banks were bailed out and they still gave top execs exorbitant bonuses but still didn’t provide loans for anyone or small business---and when drug and insurances companies continue to raise rates and prices as they simultaneously deny more and more people coverage and spend money to lobby against health care reform that would benefit us----and to see politicians and our elected officials incessantly vote against us in their favor behind closed doors----please don’t tell me we have the best system and everything is fine.

The difference between Communism,Fasism, socialism and Capitalism is ultimately neglegible.

In pure capitalism those who run the corporations are no different than those who run any of these other governments. They control the people ,rather than the people controlling their own destiny.

The united states constitution was the first document in the worlds history that makes it clear that 'We the people" as a Whole must always recognize the fact that "The people" you and I have equal rights, not as slaves, but as Sovergn's.

Despite what the u.s. supreme court justices say, corporations are not people,.and have no rights, and people are not corporations as the I.R.S. and the federal reserve say.

I really liked this hub your so right it really takes someone who is intuative and a thinker to notice all these things and to ask oneself what these crucial mind wondering questions like what the meaning of life is? are we created in this life just to live 1 day at a time ongoing like a machine or do we have a higher purpose?

we have straight answers when it comes to anwering why we maintain our lives like why we eat, sleep, drink, wash ourselves but are stumped when it comes to why we are alive?

I recently went to an islamic lecture on what the purpose of life is and it got me thinking the same way your hub did

Really nice mate i really enjoyed it thanks a lot

Scorpion123, thanks again for a very flattering compliment. These are questions we should all be asking instead of just blindly working in the system without ever questioning where we are, what we're doing, and we're we're going. Thanks again.

YOu have been duped. YOu are thinking with your heart and emotions and you have forgotten that you must have an accounting of money and expenses. Corrupt government officials are promising you things that our country cannot afford. They do so to get power over our lives and they play on simple-minded folks who have no concept of the debt load being put on our backs. Governments do not produce anything and can only extract money from hard-working people. We must maintain a system that allows people to make good money and provide for themselves. You are looking for a free ride and there is no such thing. Someone must pay. Government is not the friend you think they are. YOu want to blindly give them the controls to your life. THe American dream is built on individual freedom to succeed with very little government interference.

druhepkins Hub Author 2 years ago

Braudboy, I always think with my heart. You should try it sometimes. And I'm very well aware of the expenses entailed in government plans and programs and it sounds to me you're referring to the health care reform bill. I worked with SEIU and NJPIRG for health care reform for several months and I'm well aware of those logistics as well. ABOUT TIME. We're WAY behind England, Canada, Australia, France and every other Industrialized nation in health care because we are the most pathetically subservient to big business. Every president or politician that attempted to reform the system that OBVIOUSLY was due for reform has been shut down by special interests. I work hard and pay lots of taxes. I don’t mind so much because I appreciate my police, fire and postal services to name a few. Health care reform is not en route to a “free ride”. This country is the hegemon country and has been the most successful and powerful country in which most of us pay taxes. Health care is something needed by everyone and should have always had fair options for all, and not so repulsively for profit and unaffordable for many Americans. First of all, there’s not much new money going into the plan, it’s designed to REDUCE the national deficit over then next 10 years. The notion that it will add to our deficit is an opinion, not a fact. Maybe u haven’t realized but we’ve been blowing money horribly already, and before this sitting president.

Another reason ppl are being made to think this reform is the worst thing ever is because of partisan warfare hands down. The republican party is doing everything in their power to counter attack everything this administration does. Their not working for the American ppl right now and it’s obvious. Their working for the party and they’re trying persuade public opinion by any means necessary. I don’t think I’m the duped one.

What ppl don’t understand is that much of the money we already blow will be redirected and used more efficiently. Yes, things have been implemented, but many things have been cut and/or changed. Insurance and drug companies are the real villains, not just government. Resurrecting everyone’s fear of government was just another pathetic tactic to keep ppl blinded from the real enemies. The drug and Insurance companies raise the cost of drugs and raise premiums every year. They drop people with preexisting conditions and they drop ppl for asinine reasons to get out of covering ppl who may actually need the coverage. People have even been losing their homes and less businesses offered employees coverage because of the skyrocketing healthcare costs. Of course people and businesses, no longer under the oppressive thumb of health care costs, will effect the economy positively. You sound like a victim of a lot of the fear mongering from conservative media.

You're a really smart, insightful guy and I appreciate your blogs. Its so true. You tell it like it is, tho ppl might not be ready for it or understand. Unfortunately people will just play by the rules and exist.

Good stuff n keep blogging!

If we had a purely capitalistic economy in the US, i.e. without ANY governmental controls or regulations, it's easy to see that our lives would

be in danger constantly--hundreds of thousands of children would be

injured or killed by unsafe toys; untold thousands more of us would become sick or die without food safety regulations, etc. That is why we have a mixed system in the US, based on capitalism and private enterprise but tempered by reasonable governmantal controls to ensure

the health and safety of our citizens...

Thanks for stopping by Jaygee21. I agree, we do need a strong government, regulations, structure and order. But your comment is something someone needs to tell the Libertarians and the Tea Party.

Seriously tho, I'm not suggesting anarchy. I'm simply suggesting a social change of attitude, and controls on capitalism. I don't want to live in a world in which greed and personal gain is rewarded, and altruism is foolish. The system we currently have in place is oppressive to the have-nots and it keeps getting worse. The gap between rich and poor is growing too. Out of control capitalism is what is pushing us toward a dark period in which people won’t be able to sustain themselves with a modest salary. Soon the average middle-class family won’t be able to do simple things like buy homes or send kids to college. The health and drug industry keep raising costs and premiums just for more profit. Oil companies keep raising the cost of gas, heat, and electric (varying reasons for this one tho). The cost of housing and everything seems to be going up a hell of a lot faster than salaries are. Everyone keeps doing things for more profit and that’s the point. Everyone from big industries to the common individual following the same pattern of profit and gain will be our undoing. Capitalism needs checks and balances. There should be limits to what big industries can get away with. We’ve done this in the past with anti-trust laws but we still have more work to do.
